africa ♥

The Portland Halo Foundation is holding a silent art auction and gallery at Surface in SE Portland to showcase stories of children from the Bukesa Children's Home in Uganda, Africa. Combining their paintings with work from artists around Portland, the collection will show themes that resonate with all of us and create a bridge that will allow us to learn tangible ways to be involved in these children's lives.

As a foundation, Halo's purpose is to provide healthy living environments, education, and resources for children from impoverished circumstances. Through the orphanage, Halo is able to create a family based setting where each child's full well being is the focus. Beyond food, clothing, education, and medical attention, Halo also incorporates art, sports , music, community service, and mentorship into daily life. All of the work is made possible through the compassion of individuals, families, and businesses in the Portland area.

Tickets are $20 and include two drink tickets(beer/wine) and appetizers- all proceeds benefit the Bukesa Children's Home. To purchase tickets in advance email: katedford@gmail.com or visit www.haloworldwide.org/store.php

In addition to art and other local goods and services, there will be a package of 3 thirty minute private piano lessons with Brittany Longanecker up for auction. Please come and support this great cause or visit www.haloworldwide.org to donate online.

Hope to see you there!

"Maman" en francais by Sophi

Here's a lovely piece that Sophi wrote (en francais) for her mom on Mother's Day titled "Maman". So sweet!

Elia writes music down by memory-Amazing!

One of my 6-year-old students, Elia, has been writing her own music for a while now, but most recently she has been transcribing songs simple nursery songs that she learned to play by ear like Mary Had A Little Lamb, etc. But I was pretty amazed when I found out the method she used to write this particular song down....

Practice Makes Passionate-not Perfect

passion

"OK, it's time to stop practicing, it's been 3 hours- you have other things to do today!" I can't tell you how many times I heard this sentence from my mother as a young, budding pianist. My mother also likes to say that I could sing before I could talk(which isn't possible), but I do have very vivid memories of singing to my imaginary audience in my crib.  It's safe to say that music always has been and always will be the driving force in my life. Music has made my laugh when I want to cry(thank you Victor Borge),  helped me learn how to dance because I already knew what a" time signature" was, and has ultimately become not just my career, but my passion.

Not everyone has the problem of practicing "too much", but I think that environment and encouragement played a huge role in developing my passion for practicing.  My mother always had classical music playing in the house, Beethoven, Bach, Grieg, Mozart, Debussy, to name a few.  She made sure that I had uninterrupted blocks of time to practice and was always encouraging me to play for friends and family. We have such busy schedules these days and most of us are not getting that quiet, creative time that my mother so carefully guarded for me.  As an adult with a full-time job, I have to treasure that time even more because the hours are so few and far between. So how does one come to that place where desire overwhelms discipline and creates passion?
